CARSON, Calif.- Paulinho led Deportivo Toluca FC in their blowout win against LA Galaxy with an aggregate score of 2-7 following their victory back in Toluca, Mexico.
It was a battle of loudness between fans but the result is what spoke volumes in the end. A sea of red Toluca Jerseys was covering Dignity Health Sports Park as if it were a home game for the Mexican team. Their “Diablos” chant overcame LA Galaxy’s supporters’ chants throughout the game making their presence in Carson well known in this matchup against the “Galacticos”.
Arriving victorious from their last game(2-4 aggregate), Toluca wanted to make things more difficult for the Carson team early in the first half with Toluca forward Jesus Gallardo taking a low pressure shot from outside the box with his left foot and sending it into the the top left corner of the net in the 11th minute. With this goal, Gallardo remains as the second top Toluca scorer(three goals) in the tournament(Pauliho in first with four goals).
Despite maintaining possession of the ball for most of the first half(56%), Galaxy failed to register more than two shots(one on target) in the half while Toluca was able to get six shots in with half of them being on target. It was no help to the home team as Toluca fans controlled the atmosphere and rumbled the stadium with their voices with every chance “Los Diablos Rojos”got. Gallardo’s goal would be the only one of the half ending it 0-1(agg. 2-5).
Toluca was not done yet, as their run continued in the second half in the 58th minute as Toluca Forward Paulinho added to his tally of tournament goals and slipped past Galaxy defender Miki Yamane and sent a left footed shot within the box into the back of the net, making it 0-2 Toluca lead (Agg.2-6).
Fans in red jerseys were nothing but pleased with their chance to make even more noise as they witnessed yet another goal in what seems to be their second home. A through ball from Toluca’s Nicholas Castro that slipped through two Galaxy defenders and found none other than Forward Paulinho on the right side of the box and as if it was second nature, the Portuguese forward calmly chips the right footed shot over Galaxy goalkeeper James Marcinkowski making it 0-3(Agg. 2-7) Toluca lead.
By the final whistle, Toluca blew past Galaxy with a 2-7 aggregate score and will continue their Champions Cup run against LAFC who are coming from a victorious run against Cruz Azul. Now Galaxy have their sights set on racking up some more victories in the MLS.
