Coming into Saturday’s showdown at the Galen Center, USC was riding high — an 8–0 record and a dominant non-conference slate had them ranked No. 24 nationally, and they looked to continue that momentum in their Big Ten home opener against Washington. The Trojans boasted one of the conference’s top offenses, with strong three-point shooting (about 38.2 %) and inside-outside balance, even in the absence of injured forward Rodney Rice.
But Washington had other ideas. After trailing by as much as 18 points in the first half, the Huskies — powered by a big game from freshman Hannes Steinbach (24 points, 16 rebounds) — surged in the second half and pulled off an 84–76 comeback win. Alongside Steinbach, veteran guard Desmond Claude added 22 points while Wesley Yates III contributed 16, giving the Huskies a balanced attack and snapping an 11-game losing streak to USC at home.
For USC, the loss marks their first of the season and a sobering reminder of how fragile even a hot start can be. Despite their offensive firepower and outside shooting, the Trojans couldn’t maintain their first-half edge — Washington’s second-chance possessions and defensive rebound survival turned the tide. The defeat leaves USC at 8–1 (1–1 in Big Ten), while the Huskies improve to 6–3 (1–1 conference).
