ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. â The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time in franchise history. A 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field closed out the series 4-1 and ended a wait that began in 1969, when the franchise debuted as the Seattle Pilots.
Jacob Misiorowski delivered 5 2/3 scoreless innings of two-hit ball in the clincher, leaving to a standing ovation after a right calf cramp ended his night. The Brewers struck first in the second inning on Cooper Pratt’s RBI single, added a run in the fifth, and broke it open in the sixth when William Contreras doubled home Christian Yelich and Pratt lifted a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead. Tampa Bay’s only run came in the ninth, before Trevor Megill got Richie Palacios to ground out to second for the final out.

Contreras was named World Series MVP after batting .381 (8 for 21) with four RBIs, including the sixth-inning double that made it 3-0. His work behind the plate shaped the series just as much: he threw out four of the nine Rays who tried to steal against him and won 10 of his 13 automated ball-strike challenges. He is the first catcher to win World Series MVP since Salvador Perez in 2015.
The rookie Pratt finished with two more hits and two RBIs in Game 5, capping a series in which he recorded six consecutive hits, a rookie record. Jackson Chourio added 11 hits in the five games, a record for a five-game World Series. Milwaukee finished the postseason 11-2, including a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

The title comes one night after Tampa Bay forced Game 5 with a 4-3, 12-inning win, and it erases the franchise’s only previous World Series memory: the 1982 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. It is also Milwaukee’s first World Series title since the 1957 Braves. Read our Game 5 preview here: https://lamomentum.com/brewers-game-5-clinch-first-world-series-title-rays/
